Jazz Comes to Stevenson

Greetings!
The 16 piece Seattle
Women's Jazz Orchestra brings its
swinging big-band sound to Skamania
Lodge on Sunday evening
7pm, July 13th.
What a great way to spend an
evening, outside at the Skamania Lodge
Amphitheater, listening to one of the
best jazz orchestras in the region,
enjoying a beverage of your choice as
the sun sets over the Columbia River...
. (We do have indoor space available in
case of inclement weather)...
"Here's more conclusive evidence, if any
were needed, that jazz is no longer solely a
man's game. The Seattle Women's Jazz
Orchestra joins the burgeoning ranks of
all-female big bands that include DIVA,
Maiden Voyage, Germany's United Women's
Orchestra, Japan's Blue Aeronauts and
ensembles led by Chrissy Lee and Kit McClure
with an auspicious debut album (Dreamcatcher)
that proves there's much more than redwoods,
rain and remarkably handsome scenery in the
Pacific Northwest." (from a review by Jack
Bowers in "All About Jazz")
"Born in 2000, the Seattle Women's Jazz
Orchestra has a, bold, glossy, and swinging
sound derived from the '50s Basie book and
subsequent big show bands." (from a review
in "Jazziz" 3/05)
Alto saxophonist Barbara Hubers-Drake
co-founded the orchestra, and trombonist
Carolyn Caster is its current executive
director. The band has performed at clubs,
jazz festivals, and concert halls on two
continents and with many distinguished
artists including Don Lanphere, Mimi Fox,
Becca Duran, Susan Pascal, Greta Matassa,
Kelley Johnson, Hazel Leach, Jill Townsend,
and Ingrid Jensen
In the interest of full disclosure, it
should be noted that SWOJO isn't entirely
comprised of women-Scott Fry is the drummer,
Dennis Haldane plays trumpet and music
director/trumpeter Daniel Barry is a guest
soloist on his rhythmically evocative
composition, "Two to Tango." Barry, who has
helped guide the orchestra since its
inception some eight years ago, also wrote
"The Hiding Place," "Nisqually Riff" and the
album's perky signature song, "Dreamcatcher."
Those exceptions aside, what we have is
sophisticated big band jazz expertly
performed by members of the fairer sex who
presumably hadn't been told they're unable
to do that.
Their album was recorded in concert at
Seattle's Jazz Alley, the Tacoma Jazz
Festival, and the XIII Festival Jazz in
Lima, Peru - and it comprises such staples
as "Peanut Vendor" (arranged by Dick Vance,
circa 1939), Gershwin's "A Foggy Day," and
"Fly Me to the Moon," (arranged by Sammy
Nestico in the late '60s).
The Seattle Women's Jazz Orchestra (SWOJO)
features many of the finest female jazz
artists in the Pacific Northwest. Showcasing
high intensity jazz, tight harmonies, and
lush dynamic sounds, the band performs with
a fresh energy stemming from seven years of
thrilling audiences on two continents.

Skamania Performing Arts Foundation needs
your support. We have produced an annual
summer musical for the past six years and
our offering this year is the popular family
musical "Thoroughly Modern Millie!".
(August 5-10) Our cast and crew are
primarily from the Gorge and Portland /
Vancouver area, and our audiences range from
Portland / Vancouver to Goldendale and 11
other states (so far!)
We also produce an annual "Madrigal Feast"
at Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Washington.
This includes performers from Portland and
Vancouver Metro areas as well as from the
greater Gorge. We have recently (2006)
produced our first CD from this vocal
ensemble which received airplay on KBPS
Portland's All Classical Radio Station this
past holiday season.
Our New Director Series is for theater buffs
and features a new up and coming director
from the Portland metro area working with
SPAF's own repertory company. We'll be
producing another Agatha Christie mystery in
November.
Skamania Performing Arts Foundation is a
501(c) 3 Corporation and a Washington State
non-profit. We have been operating since
2001. Most of our budget comes in the form
of grants, individual contributions and
ticket sales. Help us keep the arts strong!
